Purple Particulars – How many purples?

How many purples are there? Well, for starters, there’s “purple guy” purple…also known as royal purple, K-State purple, pantone violet or Minnesota Vikings purple. Here are some more of the purples that we found. Send us an e-mail if you know of any purples we missed!

In a box of 64 Crayola crayons, there are nine different colors of purple. They range from lavender, orchid, and thistle, which are very light, and tend toward pink, to violet and plum, which might be called closest to "true" purple, periwinkle, blue violet, and violet blue toward the blue side, and finally, red violet.

Other purples we found are indigo, lilac, purple, eggplant, mauve, magenta, claret, burgundy, and ancient Tyrian purple, made and exported by the people of Tyre, and known to the wealthy of the Roman Empire. And just in case you were wondering, that’s where the color purple started to be associated with royalty.
