Purple Particulars – Purple in History: In 1983, April brought a Purple Pulitzer

On April 18, 1983, Alice Walker received a Pulitzer prize for “The Color Purple”

In addition to the Pulitzer “The Color Purple” has received many other awards:

It was made into a movie in 1985, directed by Steven Spielberg, starring Oprah Winfrey, Danny Glover and Whoopi Goldberg.

Golden Globe:

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama - Whoopi Goldberg

Directors Guild of America Award:
Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Motion Pictures - Steven Spielberg

And of course the

Kansas City Film Critics Circle Awards:

Best Director - Steven Spielberg

It was also made into an award winning Broadway musical in 2006.
